How to Make Money Selling Lampshades
Want to get into a business that is only limited by your creativity? Then the lamp shade business may be the one for you!
To alot of people, lamp shades are nothing more that a way to shade lamp light. However, to others, lamp shades are a work of art. Anytime you can find a product that is both functional (shades light) and is a work of art; then there is a business!
The lampshade business has been around for a long time. So long in fact, that many antique lamp shades bring in thousands of dollars. It might be hard to find a bunch of valuable antique lamp shades lying around. So, do the next best thing, and make your own unique lamp shades.
People love to add uniques touches to the decoration of their home. Therefore, if you can create a unique product that fits the design demands of homeowners, you can have a profitable business. Many “hand made” lamp shades can sell for $200 or more! The amount of money you make is really dependent on your target market, competition, and strategies for success.
First, you need to decide your target market. This can somewhat be determined by the type of lamp shade you decide to produce. There are lots of different types of lamp shades including: Table lamps, floor lamps, children’s lamps, desk lamps, wall lamps, pendant lighting, night lights, and many others. Deciding which niche to pick can really make or break your business; so do your research.
There is competition in all areas, but some is less intimidating than others. So, your target market will depend on which type of lamp shade you wish to create. It should also be more specific to those who are seeking a very unique and possibly artistic product. It would be very hard to compete if you are simply selling simple lamp shades that are no different from the ones people can pick up at Wal-mart.
So, once you have picked a target market, and sized up your competition; you need to develop a strategy. Your strategy is really what makes you stand out from your competitors. Is your artwork unique? Is the shape of your lamp shades unique? What materials will you use? You may be able to differentiate yourself by using unique materials to create your lamp shades: metal, plastic, wood, recycled goods, junk yard parts, use your imagination. (Just make sure you won’t set a house on fire!).
The potential for this business is really unlimited. Sure its limited by how many people buy lamp shades; however, you can certainly expand this business into other areas. Once you are sucessfully selling lamps, think of other products you might be able to sell using the same materials: picture frames, decorative vases, wall hangings, etc.
You also may have a keen eye for decoration, and this business could most certainly grow into an interior decorating consulting business.
So, let your imagination run wild! The more unique the lamp shade the more money it makes. This may be your ticket to riches!
